Update: The work installing the central heating has now been completed and we are pleased to announce that the system works splendidly. Additional expenditure was incurred as the project developed. A number of the floor timbers and boards had to be replaced due to rot, and the removal of the old boiler proved to be more problematic than envisaged. The quarry tiled floor required more repairs than we anticipated and as such the cost of the project has risen about £30,000. There is some further work to be done in the new year - which include major stone work repairs to the South Aisle door. The West doors are to be re-hung and general repairs to all the other external doors. The porch has had a new floor, and will be re-tiled in the January. We are pleased to report that these works will not affect services in the church, and from Christmas Eve all services will be held in church.

Background: For each winter, from about the mid 1990s, the congregation began moving out of the church to the church hall for services. The ageing heating system was becoming less and less efficient and struggled to maintain any decent temperature. Some say it never really worked adequately in the first place! The whole system was declared dangerous in 2001 and uneconomical to repair. Before the heating could be addressed there were significant other building related problems that required attention first. We are now at the stage where we are now ready to install a new heating system. At the same time as the heating installation we are going to address some urgent building repairs to the external doors, and also have a complete new sound system installed.
The cost of the whole project is £170,000. If you can help, please visit www.mydonate.bt.com/charities/stlawrenceparishchurch or send any donations to St Lawrence Heating Fund, St Lawrence Church Hall, Lawrence Street, York. YO10 3WP . Cheques should be made payable to St Lawrence's PCC. A lot of this capital has been achieved through grants however the PCC needed to find a further £50,000 - and the fund-raising campaign held in the parish to find this deficit has been very successful. We thank all those who generously responded to this, it is very much appreciated. You can download a information flyer on the Heating Project.
