The Parish

Anyone is welcome at St Lawrence, whether at services or at social activities. However, St Lawrence has a special mission to serve the people of its own parish of St Lawrence-with-St Nicholas – one of the densest parishes in York with a population of well over 7,000 within half a square mile.

The bounds of the parish, and the church in green.

The parish includes St Lawrence Primary School, Fishergate Primary School, St George’s RC Primary School, The Retreat, most of St Nicholas Fields, half of York Cemetery, Walmgate Bar, and residential houses from Hull Road Co-Op to the banks of the River Ouse.

All those who live in the parish are entitled to come to the Annual Meeting of Parishioners and take part in the election of churchwardens.

Parishioners can also apply to join the Electoral Roll and vote/stand in the Annual Parochial Church Meeting which follows. Parishioners are entitled to come to the church to get married; to get baptised (or to have their children baptised); or for their funeral.

Most importantly, though, we hope all parishioners feel that St Lawrence’s is open to them – to sit in our lovely churchyard, to pray in our church, to join us for services, to take part in the social and charitable activities of the church and everything else we do, and to lean upon the church when in need.
